Adaptation of the website of the National Museum in Lublin to make its collection available online as part of the “www.muzeach” project

The key effect of the “www.muzeach” project is the creation of a joint website with a multi-search engine that provides digital resources for five institutions participating in the project: the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów (project leader), the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, the National Museum in Lublin, the National Museum in Szczecin and the Castle Museum in Łańcut. For the National Museum in Lublin, participation in the project was also a great opportunity to adapt the institution's website to making available digitally selected objects from its collections.

The National Museum in Lublin did not have its own digital catalogue before. The website showed only individual items without extensive descriptions, with low resolution photos. Therefore, the museum wanted to create a website in line with the latest trends, intuitive to use, modern and transparent. The upgraded website downloads data from the museum's system to record the collections – both the data of objects and graphic files. It has an open structure that allows modification and extension of the content.

The catalogue of digital collections may ultimately contain 100,000 published records, i.e. registration data and photos of a given object. The resource made available under the project will initially include 2,000 records from the National Museum in Lublin. Seven of the published objects were digitised using 3D techniques. The collections prepared for opening include the most valuable and interesting works of art from the museum's collection: views of Lublin and the Lublin region from the 17th century, works of European painting from the 17th and 18th centuries, icons from the 17th to 19th centuries, works of Polish painting and drawing from 17th to 20th century, sculptures from the 14th century, Polish and European goldsmith products, clocks from the 17th century, glassware from the 18th century, Polish and European porcelain, pottery and faience items, Polish fabrics, embroidery, clothing and attire accessories from the 16th century. The Museum also plans to make available historical items important for the Lublin region, including documents, publications, postcards, banners and photographic iconography of Lublin from 1890–1939. Proportionally to the structure of the collection of the National Museum in Lublin, a large part of the exhibited objects will be the most interesting numismatic, archaeological, ethnographic and literary relics related to Wincenty Pol and Józef Czechowicz.

The main element of the upgraded website is the online collection module, the main feature of which is interactivity. The collection catalogue has a login panel, which allows the website user to set up an account. There is a search engine window, with which the user can run a simple search by entering any word or an advanced one, taking into account specific data of interest. The objects are presented as tiles – the users can search according to specific criteria or browse the content freely when they do not look for anything particular. After clicking on a given object, at least one photo is displayed with a zoom option, metadata (author, title, type, date of creation, creator, place of creation, technique, material, dimensions, owner, etc.) and the object keywords, as well as a popularising description written by the collection custodian (for selected objects). Moreover, the user can add an item to favourites, download an image and data of an item, share it on social networks or create their own art collection. In addition, the catalogue is equipped with dictionaries of e.g. creators and types, and the objects in the directory are linked by relationships.

Importantly, after the completion of the “www.muzeach” project, digital images of other objects from the collections of the National Museum in Lublin will be made available, so the online catalogue will be constantly growing. In addition, other institutions will be enabled to make available their collections at inmuseums.pl, which will gradually increase the access to national cultural resources in digital form, which is the main goal of the project.

The project “www.muzeach” is co-financed from European Funds and from the funds of the Ministry of Culture and National of the Republic of Poland. The project is implemented under the Operational Programme Digital Poland for the years 2014-2020, Priority Axis 2 “E-government and open government,” Action 2.3 “Digital availability and usefulness of public sector information,” Sub-action 2.3.2 “Digital availability of culture resources.”
