Advanced 2D presentation techniques as part of the "www.muzeach" project – presentation of gigapixel documentation products
"Advanced 2D presentation techniques" is a combination of two types of products. The first is high-resolution photographic documentation, called gigapixel documentation of the entire surface of the documented object. The second is RTI documentation files.
At the beginning of the "www.muzeach" project, we wrote about the technical side of the work being carried out. Now, after its completion, it is time to look at the effects and explain our reasons for selecting specific technological solutions for the planned applications of the finished products.
Detail matters
The main goal of the using the gigapixel technique was to document easel paintings in a way that would make it possible to present any selected fragments of a given image via the Internet with an accuracy that allows the traces of individual brush strokes to be observed.
Museum at your fingertips
The gigapixel technique enables the production of photographic documentation, which, despite its detail, does not have to be sent over the Internet as one huge file. Thanks to the appropriate preparation of photo files, the recipient can decide which part of the image will be studied and at what magnification. The preparation of this type of documentation will allow museum visitors to view their favourite paintings at home or even while visiting a museum. Gigapixel images allow you to take a closer look at details, which is especially useful with very large or very small works of art, or with objects physically difficult to access, e.g. located very high in a historic interior. With the server connection, only the data referring to the parts of the image viewed at a given moment is sent to the viewer. This enables him or her to view extraordinarly detailed images on a regular home computer or on a smartphone screen.
The project “www.muzeach” is co-financed from European Funds and from the funds of the Ministry of Culture and National of the Republic of Poland. The project is implemented under the Operational Programme Digital Poland for the years 2014-2020, Priority Axis 2 “E-government and open government,” Action 2.3 “Digital availability and usefulness of public sector information,” Sub-action 2.3.2 “Digital availability of culture resources.”
