Expansion of the Geographic Information System at the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów

The Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów was the first museum in Poland to use the Geographic Information System to such a wide extent. The data on historic architectural and sculptural objects on the premises of the former residence of King Jan III were compiled even before the launch of the “www.muzeach” project. Decorations in 28 interiors and on the facades of the Wilanów Palace were also inventoried and prepared.

What is the GIS?

The Geographic Information System is one of the ways of documenting and making available historic gardens and interiors of historic buildings along with their artistic decor. The geographic database allows for the collection, storage and sharing of data on museum resources, including various documentation and archival materials, in an ordered, logical structure. The database allows you to integrate all the knowledge necessary to manage and maintain the historic space in good condition – both spatial (two- and three-dimensional) and descriptive data. This allows you to perform analyses and visualisations, monitor and track changes over time. Thanks to the use of GIS, users can see art objects that are difficult to access during an on-site visit.

Works in the museum at Wilanów

As part of the "www.muzeach" project, it was possible to expand the Geographic Information System in the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów. During the measurement works, carried out from November 2019 to July 2020, 18 rooms were scanned using the laser scanning technique with a scanning resolution of 2 mm. In addition, the walls and ceilings of the rooms were photographed digitally with a pixel corresponding to 1 mm and an overlap between 60% and 80%. After applying two-dimensional photos to three-dimensional models from laser scanning using specialised algorithms, ortho-images were obtained – colour photos of room walls presented in a perpendicular projection. On the basis of the obtained 261 ortho-images in natural colours and 262 ortho-images in the intensity of the laser beam reflection, a division of decorations in the vector form was made in the GIS system.

For each of the objects, a team of restorers and art historians prepared descriptions that were placed in the attribute table of the vector drawing with decorations. Map applications were created for the data prepared in this way and made available on the museum's website. From their level, users have access to detailed information and documentation regarding palace interiors and individual paintings, bas-reliefs, fabrics and other objects decorating individual rooms.

Inspiration for other museums

So far the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów has made available at https://gis.muzeum-wilanow.pl/gis/eng/ over 1,200 decorations on the facades of the palace and approx. 4,100 objects from 46 interiors, of which nearly 800 come from 18 interiors included in the "www.muzeach" project. 711 ortho-images of walls and ceilings of rooms are also available on specially created applications. The data made available in this way is a form of knowledge presentation attractive for restorers, art historians, educators and enthusiasts. The positive experience gained in recent years by the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów in collecting and sharing GIS data has sparked great interest of other museum institutions in this method of managing historic materials. Other participants using the GIS in the “www.muzeach” project to make their collections more available are the Castle Museum in Łańcut and the National Museum in Szczecin.

The project “www.muzeach” is co-financed from European Funds and from the funds of the Ministry of Culture and National of the Republic of Poland. The project is implemented under the Operational Programme Digital Poland for the years 2014-2020, Priority Axis 2 “E-government and open government,” Action 2.3 “Digital availability and usefulness of public sector information,” Sub-action 2.3.2 “Digital availability of culture resources.”
