3D documentation of selected collections

The project “Rendering the Palace collections in 3D” covered two different categories of activities carried out on two distinct groups of monuments. The first was the Palace interiors, i.e. the King’s Chinese Cabinet, and the King’s Wardrobe, and the second the movable exhibits, i.e. ten ceramic sculptures from the Wilanów collection of bisque porcelain. For the purposes of documenting the interiors, an innovative measurement system was applied, which enables 3D rendering of the rich decorations of the rooms in a resolution previously available only for small objects recorded in laboratory conditions. The documentation process covers nearly 100 sq. m of wall and ceiling surface, with over 30 billion measurement points. Such an exact digital copy in the future will be used to prepare a virtual presentation of the two rooms, which due to conservation cannot be made open to the public. In turn, the scanning of the collection of bisque porcelain items was carried out on the basis of innovative robotised measurement points allowing the documentation of their surfaces with a resolution of over 2.5 thousand points per 1 sq. mm.  With the data obtained, the Wilanów Palace Museum can develop new 3D rendering tools that can be used not only for the conservation of works of art or historical research, but also to strongly support educational activities and programmes oriented towards visually impaired people.

“Rendering the Palace collections in 3D” - part of the “The revitalisation and digitalisation of Wilanów, the only Baroque royal residence in Poland” project. The Project had secured support from the European Regional Development Fund under the Infrastructure and Environment 2007-2013 Operational Programme, Priority XI “Culture and Cultural Heritage”, Activity 11.1.
